THESE HANDS BUILT AMERICA

If I could sit down at a kitchen table with one immigrant family and tell them why I wrote “These Hands Built America,” this is what I would say.

I’d pull up a chair, look across that table at the mother, the father, and their children, and before we talked about politics, borders, or anything else, I’d want them to hear four simple words from me:

I see you.

I see the long hours, the early mornings, the tired hands, and the sacrifices you make for your family. I see the people working in our farms, kitchens, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, construction sites, and neighborhoods every day.

When I wrote this song, I wasn’t thinking about numbers or labels. I was thinking about families like yours. I was thinking about the hands that harvest our food, build our homes, prepare our meals, repair our roads, and come home at night hoping their children will have a better life.

That’s why the line “Estas manos built this land” means so much to me.

Those are your hands.

Working hands. Tired hands. Proud hands. Immigrant hands. American hands.

The Blue Wave Revival Band and I didn’t want to write a song that argued about you. We wanted to write a song for you.

A song you could play for your children and say, “That’s our story too.”

Because America was never built by just one kind of person.  You didn’t just come here looking for America.

You became part of America.

And with your own two hands... you helped build it.

These hands built America

By: Rick Gaspa, Blue Wave Revival Band

[Intro – Mexican acoustic guitar, soft accordion, warm trumpet]
[Older raspy male lead]
[Slow, proud, emotional]

My father crossed with a dream in his pocket
My mother carried her faith in her hands
They didn’t come looking for something for nothing
They came here ready to work this land

[Verse 1]

Before the sunrise, we’re already moving
Coffee in a cup and dust on our shoes
Picking the crops and pouring the concrete
Doing the work somebody’s gotta do

We’ve washed the dishes, framed up the houses
Worked in the kitchens, factories too
Raised our children under this flag
Hoping their dreams might finally come true

[Pre-Chorus – light background harmony begins]

You can call us strangers
You can tell us we don’t belong
But look around this country
Our fingerprints are everywhere you walk

[Chorus – fuller band, warm background singers]

These hands built America
Estas manos built this land
Brick by brick and field by field
With calloused, working hands

We raised the roofs above you
Put the food upon your plate
These hands built America
And these hands helped make her great

[Background harmony: “These hands…”]

[Short Instrumental Turnaround – trumpet and accordion]

[Verse 2]

We’ve cleaned your offices after midnight
Mowed the lawns beneath the burning sun
Served your tables, paved your highways
And when the day was over, kept working on

Some came yesterday, some generations
Some were born beneath these stars
But every family started somewhere
Every journey leaves its scars

We speak English, hablamos español
Sometimes both around the kitchen light
But love sounds the same in every language
When you’re trying to build a better life

[Pre-Chorus – soft male and female harmonies]

We are your neighbors
Standing beside you every day
Our children say the Pledge beside yours
And dream the same American way

[Chorus]

These hands built America
Estas manos built this land
Brick by brick and field by field
With calloused, working hands

We raised the roofs above you
Put the food upon your plate
These hands built America
And these hands helped make her great

[Background singers softly echo: “Built America…”]

[Instrumental Break – 8 bars]
[Mexican trumpet carries the melody]
[Acoustic guitar, accordion, bass and light percussion]
[No vocals]

[Verse 3 – quieter, intimate]

There’s a grandma lighting candles
For the son who works all night
There’s a father sending money home
Trying to make tomorrow right

There’s a young girl doing homework
At a table after ten
While her mama works another shift
And gets up to do it all again

That’s the story no one talks about
When they argue on TV
Behind every number is a family
Trying hard just to be free

[Build – drums gradually rise]

And the Blue Wave Revival Band
Sings for every working soul
For the ones who keep this country moving
Even when nobody knows

Yeah, the Blue Wave Revival Band
Plays it loud enough to hear
You can’t erase the contribution
Of the people standing here

[Big Chorus – strong background harmonies]

THESE HANDS BUILT AMERICA
ESTAS MANOS BUILT THIS LAND
Brick by brick and field by field
With calloused, working hands

We raised the roofs above you
Put the food upon your plate
These hands built America
And these hands helped make her great

[Background harmony: “These hands built America…”]

[Bridge – drums pull back, emotional lead]

We are not asking you to fear us
We are asking you to see
The fathers, mothers, sons and daughters
Working toward the same dream

No wall can erase our footsteps
No slogan changes what we’ve done
There are millions of our stories
Underneath this American sun

[Background singers softly: “Underneath this sun…”]

[Brief Instrumental Rise – trumpet and accordion]

[Final Chorus – biggest section, background harmonies]

THESE HANDS BUILT AMERICA
ESTAS MANOS BUILT THIS LAND
From California farms
To the Rio Grande

From kitchens in Las Vegas
To construction in L.A.
These hands built America
And they’re building her today

[Background singers: “Building her today…”]

These hands built America
Hear the truth and understand
America was never built
By only one kind of hand

Black hands, brown hands
Old hands, young hands
Immigrant hands
American hands

[Background singers softly repeat: “American hands…”]

These hands built America
Estas manos built this land

[Outro – music pulls back, lead vocal warm and raspy]

Somos familia
Somos vecinos
Somos trabajadores
Somos Americanos

[Background harmony: “Somos Americanos…”]

Our fathers worked here
Our mothers prayed here
Our children dream here
And we are still here

[Background singers softly: “Still here…”]

These hands built America...

[Background harmony: “Built America…”]

Estas manos...

Built this land.

[SHORT INSTRUMENTAL OUTRO – 8 BARS]
[NO MORE VOCALS]
[Mexican trumpet plays the chorus melody]
[Soft acoustic guitar and accordion underneath]
[Warm bass, very light percussion]
[Let the trumpet melody completely resolve]
[Clean natural ending]
[Do not cut off]
