From the recording THE WAR FOLLOWED ME HOME
The final song is about what can happen after one of those terrible nights. “Morning Found Me Smiling” does not say that PTSD has disappeared or that depression has been permanently defeated. It simply captures that unexpected morning when the darkness has lifted enough to feel the sunlight again. You wake up.
You realize you made it through. Something makes you smile. And for that moment, that is enough. It is the hopeful ending to the album because after everything that came before—the war, the memories, the invisible battle, the depression, and the nights when another veteran may need to stand beside you—morning can still come. And sometimes morning finds you smiling.
Lyrics
[MORNING FOUND ME SMILING]
[INSTRUMENTAL INTRO — WARM PIANO, SOFT ACOUSTIC GUITAR, STRINGS BEGINNING TO RISE]
[VERSE 1 — GENTLE, ALMOST SURPRISED]
Morning found me smiling,
Before I even knew.
Sunlight through the window
Painted everything brand new.
Coffee tasted better.
The room didn’t feel so small.
And that weight I carried yesterday
Wasn’t quite as heavy after all.
I stood there for a minute,
Just grateful I could breathe,
Thinking how a night can make you wonder
What the morning might retrieve.
[PRE-CHORUS]
Nothing changed while I was sleeping.
No miracle came through the door.
But somehow I woke up remembering
What I’ve made it through before.
[CHORUS]
Morning found me smiling,
And damn, it felt good to be alive.
Yesterday I barely had the strength
To make it through the night.
But here I am with daylight
And another chance to see
That depression gets some days from me—
But it doesn’t get all of me.
Morning found me smiling.
And today feels good to me.
[VERSE 2]
PTSD is still there.
I know it hasn’t gone away.
There’ll be sounds and words and memories
That catch me another day.
There may be nights of nightmares.
There may be days I shut things out.
I’ve lived with this enough years now
To know what that’s about.
But today I hear some music.
Today I want to sing.
Today the world feels lighter,
And I’m noticing everything.
[PRE-CHORUS]
I don’t need forever promised.
I don’t need every wound repaired.
Sometimes one good morning
Is enough to remind me why I’m here.
[CHORUS — BUILDING]
Morning found me smiling,
And damn, it felt good to be alive.
Last night I told myself, “Just sleep.
Tomorrow, give it one more try.”
Well, tomorrow came and found me
With some sunlight on my face.
And the darkness that surrounded me
Had finally given up some space.
Depression gets some days from me—
But it doesn’t get all of me.
Morning found me smiling.
And today feels good to me.
[BRIDGE — MUSIC PULLS BACK]
To the veteran who had a bad night,
Who woke up tired from the fight,
Who spent another midnight
Trying to make it to the light—
Brother, sister, I won’t promise
That tomorrow fixes everything.
But I can tell you from experience:
Sometimes morning changes things.
Sometimes one night feels endless.
Sometimes your mind won’t let you rest.
But you’ve already carried heavy things.
You don’t have to carry them all at once.
[BUILD — DRUMS AND STRINGS RISE]
Yesterday I was exhausted.
Yesterday I needed sleep.
Yesterday the battle nobody saw
Was taking everything from me.
But yesterday is yesterday.
And I’m standing here today.
[KEY CHANGE — BIG FINAL CHORUS]
MORNING FOUND ME SMILING,
AND GOD, IT FEELS GOOD TO BE HERE.
THE SUN CAME THROUGH THE WINDOW
AND THE WORLD LOOKED A LITTLE CLEAR.
I poured myself some coffee.
I turned the music on.
And somewhere between last night and now
The worst of it was gone.
No, PTSD didn’t disappear.
And depression may come back someday.
But neither one owns tomorrow.
And neither one owns today.
Morning found me smiling.
I made it through another night.
Morning found me smiling.
And today…
Today I’m all right.
[FINAL REFRAIN — WARM, STRONG]
Last night I said,
“I’ll try again tomorrow.”
Tomorrow came.
And so did I.
[LONG INSTRUMENTAL OUTRO — PIANO REPRISE, WARM STRINGS, CLEAN ELECTRIC GUITAR, CELLO, LIVE DRUMS — NO MORE VOCALS]
