I'LL STAND THE WATCH WITH YOU
Blue Wave Revival
Written by Rick Gaspa
When I was 17 years old, I enlisted in the United States Army. I served two tours in Vietnam, but some of the battles I fought didn't end when I came home. More than fifty years later, I still live with PTSD, depression, nightmares, and memories that sometimes refuse to let go.
That's why this song means so much to me.
"I'll Stand the Watch With You" is about something we learned in the military: You never leave your brothers and sisters behind. And that promise shouldn't end when we take off the uniform.
I know what it's like to lie awake in the middle of the night, fighting battles nobody else can see. I know what it's like to tell someone you're doing fine when you're anything but fine. And I know how much it can mean when somebody simply sits beside you and says, "I've been there. I understand."
This song is also for the husbands, wives, partners, families, doctors, nurses, counselors, and caregivers who stand beside us. They may never fully understand what we've experienced, but their compassion, patience, and willingness to listen can make all the difference.
Through Blue Wave Revival and The War Followed Me Home Initiative, I'm using my personal experiences and our music to reach veterans who may be struggling in silence. We're not interested in pointing fingers or assigning blame. We're interested in making sure that another veteran doesn't have to face the darkness alone.
If you're a veteran listening to this song tonight, I want you to know something. You haven't been forgotten. You don't have to pretend you're okay. And asking for help doesn't make you any less of a soldier.
I can't promise to erase your memories or make every difficult night disappear. But I can promise to keep telling our stories, keep raising awareness, and keep using our music to remind you that somebody understands.
Because even after all these years, there's one promise I still believe in:
"I've been there. And I'm still here too. Tonight, I'll stand the watch with you."

Lyrics
[INTRO – atmospheric synths, piano, restrained drums]
[Male Lead – low, controlled, sung]
We are Blue Wave Revival
Veterans carrying stories of our own
Some wounds follow you home
Some battles never leave
And some voices have been quiet far too long
[VERSE 1]
We wore the uniform, answered the call
Some came home standing, some barely at all
Some wounds healed, some stayed behind
Some settled deep in the heart and mind
Years may pass, but memories remain
A quiet room can bring it back again
Nobody sees what another one hides
There’s more to a veteran than what meets the eyes
[PRE-CHORUS]
When someone is hurting
Don’t turn away
Sometimes one voice
Can get them through another day
[CHORUS – strong male lead, restrained male harmonies]
It’s a crime when we leave someone lonely
It’s a crime when we pretend not to see
When a brother or sister is fighting in silence
And wondering if anyone still believes
We don’t need anger
We don’t need blame
We need somebody calling their name
When the darkness comes and the night feels long
Stand beside them
Help them hold on
[VERSE 2]
Some wake at midnight fighting old wars
Some stare for hours at bedroom doors
Some hide the pain behind a smile
And tell everybody they’re doing fine
Families carry part of it too
Learning what to say and what not to do
Standing beside someone year after year
Loving them through memories, anger and fear
[PRE-CHORUS]
You may not understand it
You don’t have to know
Just stay beside them
And don’t let go
[CHORUS]
It’s a crime when we leave someone lonely
It’s a crime when we pretend not to see
When a brother or sister is fighting in silence
And wondering if anyone still believes
We don’t need anger
We don’t need blame
We need somebody calling their name
When the darkness comes and the night feels long
Stand beside them
Help them hold on
[VERSE 3]
There are doctors and nurses who still understand
Counselors reaching out a steady hand
Veterans helping veterans through
Because sometimes the one who’s been there knows what to do
No machine can replace a caring voice
No wounded veteran should feel without choice
Compassion still matters, dignity too
Sometimes healing starts when somebody hears you
[VERSE 4]
We took an oath and we still remember
Through the heat of July and the cold of December
Different branches, different wars
Different memories behind different doors
But one old lesson still remains:
You don’t leave your people alone in the rain
The uniform may hang in the closet today
But taking care of each other never goes away
[BRIDGE – music drops back, SOLO MALE LEAD ONLY]
If you’re carrying something nobody can see
If the nights feel longer than they used to be
If you’re tired of telling everyone you’re all right
There are people who understand that fight
You don’t have to explain every scar
You don’t have to pretend you’re stronger than you are
Just reach one hand into the dark
Sometimes one small light is enough to start
[INSTRUMENTAL BUILD]
[Piano, cello, clean electric guitar, restrained military-style snare]
[FINAL CHORUS – key change, powerful but controlled]
It’s a crime when we leave someone lonely
It’s a crime when we pretend not to see
When a brother or sister is fighting in silence
And wondering if anyone still believes
So keep the promise
Stand the watch
Reach for somebody who thinks they are lost
When the darkness comes and the night feels long
Stand beside them
Help them hold on
[FINAL LIFT – sustained clear male vocal]
Blue Wave Revival will keep singing these songs
For every veteran trying to carry on
For every family walking beside
For every hidden battle somebody still hides
No shouting needed
No battle cry
Just one veteran looking another in the eye
Saying, “I’ve been there
And I’m still here too
Tonight, I’ll stand the watch with you”
[ALL VOCALS END]
[LONG INSTRUMENTAL OUTRO – 35–45 seconds]
[NO VOCALS]
[NO SPOKEN WORDS]
[NO CHANTS]
[NO CROWD SOUNDS]
[NO SHOUTING]
[NO GANG VOCALS]
[NO HUMMING]
[Clean electric guitar carries the chorus melody]
[Piano and cello answer softly]
[Restrained drums and warm strings build gradually]
[Finish with a strong, clean instrumental resolution]
[NO FADE]
