“BLUE WAVE REVIVAL” is really our way of introducing ourselves all over again.
When I first started writing music for Blue Wave Revival, a lot of what I wrote came from things happening in this country that frustrated me, angered me, or made me feel like I needed to say something. Those songs were real, and I don't regret them. But somewhere along the way, I started realizing there were other stories I wanted—and needed—to tell.
I'm a veteran. I served in the U.S. Army, including two tours in Vietnam, and more than five decades later there are things from those years that are still part of me. The other members of Blue Wave Revival have their own stories too. That's what I want our music to be about now: the things we've lived, the things we've carried home, and the things we've learned along the way.
That's really what this song is saying. We're fifteen musicians and fifteen veterans making music out of Las Vegas. We're singing about veterans coming home, PTSD, depression, families who stand beside us, memories that don't always disappear, and those nights when somebody just needs to know another person is there.
But we're also going to sing about life. Love. Getting older. Looking back. Screwing up. Laughing at ourselves. Losing people. Finding people. Starting over. And waking up some mornings, I'm surprised that life can still make you smile.
I don't want Blue Wave Revival to be about telling people what they're supposed to think. I want us to tell stories. If you hear yourself in one of those stories, then we've done what we came to do.
There's a line in this song that means a lot to me: “Singing the stories that too often go unsaid.”
That's Blue Wave Revival now. Music doesn't have to scream to have something to say. Sometimes a song can reach somebody sitting alone late at night in a way that a speech never could.
So when you hear us sing, “We are Blue Wave Revival, and we're still here,” there's a little more behind those words than the name of a music group. We're veterans. We're musicians. We've lived a few years, collected a few scars, made some mistakes, learned a few things, and we've still got stories left to tell. So we're going to keep telling them. One song at a time.
