The Birth of a Song I Never Wanted to Write

The Birth of a Song I Never Wanted to Write

The noise pouring out of the news lately has been enough to make me physically turn away from the TV — not because I don’t care, but because I care too much. For the past month, it’s been eating at me. Chewing at my conscience. So much so that, yes, I’m going to say it: right now, I am ashamed to call myself an American.

I can already hear some people rolling their eyes. “Rick, you’re being dramatic. Things can’t be that bad.” But you know what? They really are. At least for me. Bad enough that I’ve been lying awake in bed for nights on end, staring at the ceiling, my head crowded with words I couldn’t shake loose until I wrote them down.

And here’s where it gets embarrassingly real — I didn’t even have a notebook handy. So yeah… I grabbed the closest thing in reach: a roll of toilet paper. That’s where this song started. On those makeshift scraps, the frustration poured out of me. Call it too much information if you want, but that’s the raw truth of it.

The song is called “I Am a Shame to Be an American Right Now.” And it’s not just another protest anthem — it’s the kind of song that forces you to look in the mirror and ask some hard questions. The Blue Wave Revival Band and I are about to give it everything we’ve got. I’m putting out an SOS to my crew to get to my home studio as fast as possible so we can get this one recorded, mixed, and mastered.

Once we’ve got it in the can, I’ll upload it here so you — my friends, my people — can hear it before anyone else. This isn’t just a song. It’s a statement. It’s a shout into the storm. And I hope, when you hear it, you’ll feel every word. -  Rick Gaspa and the Blue Wave Revival Band

---------------------------------

INTRO (piano + kick drum build, airy pad in background)
🎤 Spoken, heartfelt but biting:
“They told me this was the greatest country in the world…
…then they showed me the fine print.”

VERSE 1 (soft piano, light drums, intimate vocal)
I wake up to headlines that I can’t defend
The lies just keep coming, there’s no sign they’ll end
We call it freedom but it’s just for the few
And I don’t know what that makes me… but it’s not proud, it’s not true

VERSE 2 (add bass + snare, light guitar)
I see kids in cages while the crowd looks away
We ban books and voices, but the guns get to stay
We say we’re united but we’re breaking apart
We’re building walls instead of opening hearts

PRE-CHORUS (drums build, guitars swell)
And I can’t stand by while the world’s on fire
I can’t sing along to a liar’s choir

CHORUS (full band, soaring vocals)
I am a shame to be an American right now
I won’t fake a smile or take a bow
We’re drowning in the noise, can’t hear the vow
I am a shame to be an American right now

VERSE 3 (dynamic drop — back to bass, kick, and soft guitar)
Healthcare’s a privilege, not a right
Truth gets buried in the dead of night
We sell the dream, then tear it down
And crown the thief with a plastic crown

BRIDGE 1 (mid-tempo groove, emotional vocals)
Oh, say can you see through the smoke and the screens?
The flags we wave don’t mean what they mean
I’m still here, I still believe we can change
But we can’t heal if we just stay the same

VERSE 4 (return to full band, bigger energy)
We choke the truth, rewrite the past
Tell the future it will never last
We point the blame, but it’s all our fight
We can’t fix a thing in the dark of night

VERSE 5 (lift, brighter chords under serious tone)
I want to love this place again someday
But love takes work, and we’ve lost our way
Until the day that we make it right
I’ll raise my voice in the dead of night

BRIDGE 2 (big, chant-like — crowd vocals layered)
Shame, shame, shame — I can’t fake the pride
Shame, shame, shame — you can’t hide the lies
Shame, shame, shame — say it loud somehow
I am a shame to be American now

CHORUS (repeat twice — first full band, second with added vocal harmony layers)
I am a shame to be an American right now
I won’t fake a smile or take a bow
We’re drowning in the noise, can’t hear the vow
I am a shame to be an American right now

OUTRO (music drops to just piano + vocal)
“This isn’t hate for my country…
…it’s love that refuses to lie.”

As Seen in Progressive Publications

“A progressive band blending soul, truth, and activism—The Blue Wave Revival brings music that moves hearts and ignites change.”

— Las Vegas Review

“The Blue Wave Revival Band is not just another group making music. They are creating an experience. Their songs are more than notes, rhythms, or melodies; they are living, breathing stories that carry a message meant to be shared, absorbed, and passed along. Every track feels like an urgent reminder that music can inspire change, uplift communities, and give a voice to those who need to be heard. What sets this band apart is their ability to blend storytelling and activism seamlessly with their music. They don’t just entertain — they challenge, they encourage, and they move people to think and feel deeply. This is the kind of musical entertainment that doesn’t fade after the song ends; it stays with you, echoing like the final lines of a play that you can’t stop replaying in your mind. 🌊”
