“Still Building America” is the final chapter of These Hands: An American Family Story. After the suitcase was packed, a new life was started, families gathered around the kitchen table, and generations of working hands helped build a future, this song brings the story into the present and reminds us that the work is not finished.

America wasn’t built by one generation, one culture, or one kind of person. It has been built generation after generation by people willing to work, sacrifice, raise families, start businesses, serve their communities, and dream of something better for their children.

Performed by the Blue Wave Revival Band, “Still Building America” honors the immigrants, working families, and generations that came before us while recognizing the people doing that same work today. New families are still arriving. Children are still growing up between cultures and languages. Working hands are still building our homes, cities, communities, and future.

This is where the album ends, but not where the story ends. The suitcase may belong to an earlier generation and the working hands may change with time, but the American story continues.

We built America together — and we’re still building it.

Lyrics

[Intro – warm acoustic guitar, distant accordion, slow drums]

My father’s hands,
Your mother’s hands,
Hands that crossed a border,
Hands that worked the land.

Some came here with nothing,
Some were born right here,
But every generation
Left a little something here.

[Verse 1]

There’s a light in the kitchen
Before the morning sun,
Coffee on the table,
Another day begun.

Boots beside the doorway,
Lunch packed in a sack,
You leave while the kids are sleeping,
And you come home with an aching back.

You pour the roads and raise the walls,
Cook the meals and clean the halls,
Drive the trucks through rain and snow,
Plant the fields and make things grow.

[Pre-Chorus]

Different names, different stories,
Different roads that brought us here,
But when the work needs doing,
We all understand it clear.

[Chorus]

We’re still building America,
One long day at a time.
With tired hands and stubborn hearts,
And dreams we won’t leave behind.

From the farms to the factories,
From the desert to the sea,
America was built by all of us,
And that’s how it’s gonna be.

Yeah, we’re still building America,
And America’s still building me.

[Verse 2]

English at the job site,
Spanish back at home,
Grandma tells the old stories
So the children always know.

Where the family started,
Why they came this way,
What somebody sacrificed
So they could stand here today.

Some wore uniforms for this country,
Some worked two jobs instead,
Some sent every dollar home
And kept the family fed.

No history book could hold the names
Of everyone who carried weight,
But you can see their fingerprints
On every city, field, and state.

[Chorus]

We’re still building America,
One long day at a time.
With tired hands and stubborn hearts,
And dreams we won’t leave behind.

From Las Vegas lights to neighborhood streets,
From every town to every field,
America isn’t something handed down,
It’s something ordinary people build.

Yeah, we’re still building America,
And there’s a whole lot left to build.

[Bridge – instrumentation grows, emotional but restrained]

So don’t tell me you don’t belong here
Because your last name sounds different than mine.
Don’t tell me one family matters more
Because they crossed a different line.

Put our hands beside each other—
The scars look much the same.
Calloused palms don’t ask a question
About birthplace, color, or name.

And somewhere tonight another child
Is watching Mom or Dad come through the door,
Learning what America really means
Without hearing one speech about it at all.

[Break – acoustic guitar and accordion, 4 bars]

[Final Chorus – full band, strongest vocal]

WE’RE STILL BUILDING AMERICA,
Every daughter, every son.
Every family that kept believing
When somebody said they didn’t belong.

These hands built America,
And these hands aren’t finished yet.
There are promises worth keeping,
And debts we must never forget.

Blue Wave Re-vy-vul Band,
Sing it plain and sing it true—
America belongs to all the hands
That keep doing what they do.

We’re still building America,
Under one red, white, and blue.

[Final Vocal – music drops slightly]

These hands built America...

And tomorrow...

They’ll build it again.

[VOCALS END HERE — ABSOLUTELY NO MORE SINGING OR SPOKEN WORDS]

[Extended Instrumental Outro – 35–45 seconds]

Acoustic guitar carries the chorus melody.
Warm Mexican accordion answers the guitar.
Clean electric guitar enters with a slow melodic solo.
Bass and drums continue at a steady restrained groove.
Trumpet softly repeats part of the chorus melody.
Gradually remove drums, then bass.
Finish with acoustic guitar and accordion together.

NO VOCALS. NO HUMMING. NO CHANTS. NO SPOKEN WORDS.

Final acoustic guitar chord rings naturally to silence.

“Veterans telling real stories through music—Blue Wave Revival brings heart, honesty, and hope to those serving today, those who served, their families, and anyone who needs to know they’re not alone.”

— Las Vegas Review

“I started listening to Blue Wave Revival expecting to hear some good music. I didn’t expect it to hit me the way it did. There’s something different about hearing veterans tell these stories in their own way. You can feel the memories, the years, the people they haven’t forgotten, and the things that sometimes followed them home. . What stayed with me most was the honesty. These songs don’t try to make military service glamorous, and they don’t pretend that PTSD, depression, loss, or coming home can be wrapped up neatly in a three-minute song. They simply tell the stories. And because the people behind Blue Wave Revival are veterans themselves, you believe them. . But this music isn’t only for veterans. I heard songs about getting older, loving someone, losing someone, remembering where you came from, making it through a terrible night, and waking up with enough hope to try again. Those are human stories. . A few songs made me think. A few brought back memories. And a couple stayed with me long after I stopped listening. . That’s what I think makes Blue Wave Revival different. **They aren’t just singing songs. They’re singing about lives—and sometimes you unexpectedly hear a little of your own life in them.**”
