“Two Languages at the Kitchen Table” is one of the most personal chapters of These Hands: An American Family Story. It takes us away from the job sites and city streets and brings us inside the home, where family, culture, and generations come together around one kitchen table.

At that table, two languages can live side by side. One may carry the memories and traditions of the country a family came from, while the other becomes part of the new life they are building in America. Children may answer their parents in a different language, stories may be told with words from both, but everyone still understands what matters most: family.

Performed by the Blue Wave Revival Band, “Two Languages at the Kitchen Table” celebrates families who have learned that becoming American does not mean forgetting where they came from. Traditions, food, stories, laughter, and language can be passed from one generation to the next while new traditions are created along the way.

Sometimes the story of America isn't found in a history book. Sometimes it's sitting around a kitchen table, where two languages are spoken, two cultures meet, and one family calls America home.

Lyrics

[TWO LANGUAGES AT THE KITCHEN TABLE]

[Intro – warm acoustic guitar, soft accordion]
[Older raspy male lead]
[Gentle female harmony]

There were two languages
At our kitchen table
English from the schoolbooks
Spanish from Abuela

Mama passed the tortillas
Papa poured the coffee slow
And somehow around that table
We learned everything we needed to know

[Verse 1]

At school I answered “yes, ma’am”
At home it was “sí, mamá”
I learned the Pledge of Allegiance
Then listened to stories from Papá

We watched American ballgames
With music from Mexico playing low
Two different worlds in one small room
And both of them felt like home

[Pre-Chorus]

Nobody told us we had to choose
One side or the other way
We carried both inside our hearts
Every single day

[Chorus]

Two languages at the kitchen table
Two worlds sharing one old light
English for tomorrow
Spanish for the stories told at night

We were learning who we were
Between the laughter and the food
Two languages at the kitchen table
And both of them were true

[Background singers softly]
Both of them were true...

[Short Instrumental – accordion and trumpet]

[Verse 2]

Abuela told us where we came from
How her father worked the land
Papa told us why he came here
With a suitcase in his hand

Mama said, “Never lose your roots
But don't be afraid to grow”
You can love the place your family came from
And still love the home you know

Sunday smelled like chile
Monday smelled like school
Friday night was family
And Saturday broke every rule

We mixed old family traditions
With the lives we came to know
And every year that table
Made a little more room to grow

[Chorus]

Two languages at the kitchen table
Two worlds sharing one old light
English for tomorrow
Spanish for the stories told at night

We were learning who we were
Between the laughter and the food
Two languages at the kitchen table
And both of them were true

[Verse 3 – softer]

Years later I had children
Sitting where I used to sit
They asked me why Abuela
Sometimes spoke a little bit

Of words they didn't understand yet
So I taught them one by one
“Familia,” “gracias,” “te quiero”
And where our story had begun

Then one night my little daughter
Looked across the table and smiled
Spoke to Grandma in Spanish
Like she'd known it all the while

And I swear I saw three generations
Living in that little room
The past, the present, and tomorrow
All sitting there with spoons

[Build]

And the Blue Wave Revival Band
Sings for families just like mine
Where two languages share the same roof
And somehow fit just fine

Yeah, the Blue Wave Revival Band
Knows a country grows that way
When we keep the things we came here with
And add something new each day

[Bridge – emotional]

You don't lose America
By remembering where you're from
You don't love this country less
Because you taught your child your mother's tongue

A family can carry history
And still begin again
There is room beneath this flag
For where we've been and where we're headed

[Final Chorus – full harmonies]

TWO LANGUAGES AT THE KITCHEN TABLE
TWO WORLDS SHARING ONE OLD LIGHT
English for tomorrow
Spanish for the stories told at night

We were never half of anything
We were everything we knew
Two languages at the kitchen table
And every word was true

[Background singers]
Every word was true...

[Outro – softer]

Now that old table's scratched and faded
But I wouldn't change a thing
I can still hear Mama laughing
And the songs Abuela used to sing

Two languages at the kitchen table
One family underneath

Different words for all the little things...

But love meant the same to me.

[SHORT INSTRUMENTAL OUTRO – 8 BARS]
[NO MORE VOCALS]
[Warm Mexican trumpet]
[Accordion and acoustic guitar underneath]
[Clean natural ending]
