I wrote “Waving for Freedom” in honor of Flag Day, June 14th—a day to reflect not just on what the flag symbolizes, but on what it should stand for: justice, equality, and a promise to all. This song is a tribute to every American who’s carried that promise forward, from Selma to Normandy, from Valley Forge to today’s peaceful marches for change.

I’ll be honest—this one took me three times longer to write than most songs. I wanted every note and every word to mean something real to anyone who listens. By the time I finally put this song to bed and into the can for release, it had taken the breath out of me. I poured everything I had into it, and I hope you can feel that in the music—the emotion, the weight, the love, the fight.

June 6th Is Sacred—And We Won’t Let Trump Rewrite It

Eighty-one years ago this morning, American soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy. They parachuted behind enemy lines. They faced gunfire, chaos, and almost certain death. They did it to liberate Europe from the grip of a genocidal dictatorship. That moment marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany—and it remains one of the most defining acts of bravery in human history.

Yesterday, in the Oval Office, German Chancellor Merz thanked America for that sacrifice. He acknowledged what we did for freedom—not just for Europe, but for the world.

Trump’s response? “That was not a pleasant day for you.”

That’s what he said. That’s where his sympathies lie. Once again, handed the simplest opportunity to show basic human decency and historical understanding, Trump shrugs it off and slips toward the side of tyranny.

This isn't just about him being offensive or ignorant—it's about his open comfort with dictatorship. And now, as he eyes co-opting the Army’s 250th anniversary and possibly even D-Day itself, we must draw a line.

Our parents and grandparents met their moment. They paid with their lives to preserve freedom. What will we tell our children if we fail to meet ours?

This is why we fight. And yes, not everyone can take to the streets or speak from a podium. But all of us can do something. Whether that’s voting, donating to groups like VoteVets, or even amplifying truth through music and art

That’s why we formed the Blue Wave Revival Band—to remind people, in every note we play and every lyric we sing, that democracy is worth fighting for. We're not just making music; we're making noise in the name of justice.

So, don’t let June 6th be rewritten by a man who stands with oppressors. Let it be remembered for what it truly was—and let us rise now, as they did then, with courage, unity, and resolve.

In the recent past, while blogging about the direction of the Democratic Party, I made a point that still rings true—we’ve got to look to younger voters if we want to win in 2028 and beyond. That same principle applies to the work we do here at the Blue Wave Revival Band. If we’re serious about change, we’ve got to evolve with the next generation and meet them where they are—musically, emotionally, and politically. That’s exactly what I set out to do with my newly composed song, "Hey, it’s Rick Gaspa." It’s fresh, bold, and a little different—but still rooted in the passion and purpose that drive everything we do. The band and I truly hope you enjoy it.

New Song Drop: "The Ghosts of 1776"

When I sat down to write The Ghosts of 1776, I didn’t do it for radio spins or applause. I did it because the air started to feel too heavy with history repeating itself. The song is a warning cry—an echo from our nation’s founding, when the authors of the Declaration of Independence called out King George for a terrifying abuse: exiling dissenters to be tried overseas for “pretended offenses.”

Sound familiar?

Today, we have a president again who’s openly fantasizing about exiling Americans, shipping dissenters to foreign prisons. That’s not a campaign promise—it’s a threat straight out of the tyrant’s handbook. And it’s exactly what the revolution of 1776 was meant to end.

The Ghosts of 1776 is for anyone who still believes in the soul of democracy, who hears the footsteps of the past growing louder, and knows we cannot ignore them. It’s not just a song—it’s a reminder: democracies don’t exile their own people. Dictators do.
